Garmin Foretrex 601 and 701 Ballistic Edition Wrist-mounted GPS navigator

foretrex-601-701-banner

Garmin announced the Foretrex 601 and Foretrex 701 Ballistic Edition, the newest wrist-mounted GPS navigators for outdoor and tactical use. The Foretrex 601 and Foretrex 701 Ballistic Edition helps users keep their bearings nearly anywhere in the world thanks to the built-in GPS, GLONASS and Galileo satellite system support.

In addition to its high-sensitivity GPS, the new Foretrex 701 Ballistic Edition adds Applied Ballistics Elite software to calculate aiming solutions for long-range shooters. After a dominant showing at this year’s King of 2 Mile shooting competition, where the Foretrex 701 Ballistic Edition with AB Elite software made its first appearance, the advantages were clear. “Handling the various devices required to spot and engage targets with precision rifle fire can be an overwhelming task. Having your AB fire control strapped to your wrist frees up a hand for other tasks, which enables the shooter to execute more efficiently,” said Bryan Litz, champion shooter and Applied Ballistics Chief Ballistician.

The Applied Ballistics Elite solver includes the entire Applied Ballistics bullet library and allows users to enter a variety of parameters including wind, temperature, humidity, range, and firing direction. It provides the information needed to fire projectiles through Extreme Long Range (ELR) including elevation holdover, windage, velocity and time of flight. The Applied Ballistics Engine calculates variables such as Horizontal Coriolis Effect, Vertical Coriolis Effect, Spin Drift, Aerodynamic Jump, and more. It also includes the most extensive database of custom drag models for hundreds of bullet types, which are live fire verified in the Applied Ballistics Lab. When strapped to the wrist, the shooter never has to take their eyes off the downrange target to check their paper DOPE charts, and with the dynamic Range Card feature, the shooter can make quick adjustments based on environmental conditions to dial in the shooting solutions to actual impact points downrange.

“With the Foretrex 601 and Foretrex 701, we were able to pack more features than ever before, including the addition of GLONASS and Galileo support into a very durable, but compact device,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “These Foretrex models help you keep your hands free while you focus on easily navigating the path ahead.”`

Explore longer with the Foretrex 601 and 701 thanks to a battery life that exceeds 48 hours in navigation mode, up to one week in UltraTrac mode, and up to one month in watch mode (requires 2 AAA batteries, not included). Every bit as tough as they look, these devices are constructed to military standards for thermal, shock and water performance (MIL-STD-810G standard), and are designed to withstand the elements.

The units are BLE and ANT compatible, and support external ANT+ sensors such as the tempe temperature sensor, heart rate monitors and cadence/speed sensors. Users can also remotely activate any of Garmin’s VIRB cameras. Foretrex 601 and Foretrex 701 allows for a host of connected features like smart notifications that allow the user to receive emails, texts and alerts on the device, plus automatic uploads to Garmin Connect and LiveTrack. Compatible with Garmin’s exclusive QuickFit 26 bands as well as Nylon straps, it’s easy to customize for any of your adventures.

Garmin quatix 5 Marine GPS Smartwatch

quatix5

Garmin announced the quatix 5, its next-generation marine GPS smartwatch that’s specifically designed for life on the water. More than a watch, the quatix 5 provides comprehensive boat connectivity with compatible Garmin chartplotters and other marine electronics to offer autopilot control, remote multifunction display (MFD) waypoint marking, data streaming – including speed, depth, temperature and wind – sail racing assistance, and much more. In addition to preloaded marine-specific feature sets, the quatix 5 also includes a host of built-in activity profiles for land and water sports like running, hiking, biking, swimming, rowing, and paddle boarding to name a few.

With an extended battery life, daily activity tracking, smart notifications, and Garmin Elevate wrist heart rate technology, the quatix 5 can be worn 24/7 and easily transitions from water to land. Built to withstand the harsh marine environment, the quatix 5 measures at 47mm and features a rugged yet sleek design with a stainless steel bezel, buttons and rear case that’s more compact than previous models. Thanks to the new QuickFit bands available in metal, leather or silicone, users can interchange their watchband in seconds and without tools.

“From fishermen chasing billfish or bass to canoeists, kayakers and big sail and power boaters, the quatix 5 was designed for life on the water,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “It combines feature and design qualities from our popular fenix 5 multi-sport watch series with boating, fishing, cruising and sailing capabilities to deliver the most sophisticated and connected general-purpose marine smartwatch on the market today.”

When paired with onboard Garmin electronics, the quatix 5 can stream NMEA 2000 boat data to give users access to important sensor information like speed, depth, temperature, wind data and more – right from their wrist, no matter where they’re at on the boat. What’s more, when the quatix 5 is paired with a GHC 20 autopilot control unit, it can be used to control the autopilot to change heading, engage heading hold, steer to an active GPS route, and initiate patterns so that users can maintain control of the vessel, even if they’re not the one at the helm.

The quatix 5 also makes it easier than ever to mark and save a waypoint from anywhere on the boat – with the touch of a button, the quatix 5 can be used to remotely mark a waypoint on a connected chartplotter(s). And, users can also use the quatix 5 to control their onboard entertainment system thanks to the built-in FUSION Lite app that controls connected StereoActive products as well as other ANT-enabled stereo models.

Specifically designed for the water, the quatix 5 gives mariners up-to-date tide data downloaded for the area they’re in through a smartphone, and will have access to that data for seven days. It’s also equipped with an anchor alarm to warn users of drift and an anchor rode calculator that tells the user the proper length of anchor line to put out. For fishing, a competition timer and fish catch log are available to help users keep track of the fish they’ve caught and the time remaining before getting back to weigh-in. And for sail racing, the quatix 5 features tack assist, race countdown timer, distance to start line, and time to burn.

Water rated to 100 meters, the quatix 5 is built to withstand the elements and features a sunlight-readable color display with an LED backlight so data is easily visible in any light. With an omni-directional stainless steel EXO antenna and high-sensitivity GPS with GLONASS support, it has the ability to track in more challenging environments than GPS alone. The quatix 5 boasts up to 24 hours of battery life in GPS mode, 60 hours in UltraTrac mode and two weeks in smartwatch mode (depending on settings).

In addition to the marine and multi-sport features, the quatix 5 can be worn for daily activity tracking so users can wear their quatix as a daily timepiece. It boasts a variety of connected features and when paired with a compatible smartphone, users can get call, text and email smart notifications right on their wrist. The quatix 5 is compatible with Connect IQ, an open platform for third-party developers to create content for compatible Garmin wearables, so users can customize their watch with apps, widgets, data fields and watch faces.

The quatix 5 is expected to be available in June in two versions: the quatix 5 and the quatix 5 Sapphire. The quatix 5 Sapphire has a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal lens and includes a stainless steel band as well as a blue silicone QuickFit band.

Garmin was recently named Manufacturer of the Year for the second year in a row by the NMEA, an honor given to the most recognized marine electronics company for support of products in the field. Garmin’s portfolio includes some of the industry’s most sophisticated chartplotters and touchscreen multifunction displays, sonar technology, high-definition radar, autopilots, high-resolution mapping, sailing instrumentation, and other products and services that are known for innovation, reliability, and ease-of-use.

“Thanks to the enhanced feature set of our 2017 Drive navigators, it’s easy to see how consumers can benefit and rely on them every time they step in their vehicles,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of worldwide sales. “Free live parking and traffic, plus new travel information lets drivers enjoy the actual ride and save precious time when heading to work, driving on family road trips, or running errands.”

Like its predecessors, the new Garmin Drive navigators equally boast a number of driver alerts. This includes warnings for upcoming sharp curves, railroad or animal crossings, alerts for users driving the wrong-way on a one-way street and more. Drivers also receive alerts for red light cameras, speed cameras and more. Garmin Real Directions simplifies navigation by guiding drivers using recognizable landmarks, buildings and traffic lights. In addition, the all-new Watch Link feature adds navigation to a driver’s wrist. Each navigator in the 2017 product line may be paired with a Connect IQ-compatible Garmin smartwatch, such as the new fēnix5 (sold separately), to provide helpful compass guidance from a parked vehicle to a destination and back to the parked vehicle again.

The entry-level Garmin Drive 51/61 adds free real-time services, such as live traffic, for select models when wirelessly paired with a Bluetooth-enabled smartphone. After pairing to a smartphone, drivers can also enjoy live parking information from Parkopedia, the world’s leading parking service provider. Parkopedia conveniently provides pricing and availability trends for on-street public parking as drivers approach a destination. The integrated camera enhances advanced driver awareness alerts such as Forward Collision and Lane Departure Warnings. To take some of the guesswork out of navigating to new address locations, Garmin Real Vision shows a live camera view on the display with an arrow pointing out the specific destination. The “Go” Alert notifies distracted drivers when standstill traffic ahead of their vehicle begins to move. Garmin DriveAssist has the added benefit of being a personal companion if users encounter an incident during a drive. This model can send an automatic text to a friend and provide them with the vehicle’s location. Additionally, the navigator’s Travelapse feature can turn long hours of driving footage into a short video recap of the adventure. By downloading the free Garmin VIRB app, drivers can create Travelapse videos and share them on social media.

Garmin introduces the Dash Cam 45 and 55

dashcam55baner

Garmin is happy to announce the compact Dash Cam 45 and Dash Cam 55 – new standalone driving recorders with a uniquely small and unobtrusive hardware design and new advanced driver awareness alerts. The Garmin Dash Cam 45 and 55 offer high-quality eyewitness recording with automatic incident detection (G-sensor) to save footage on impact, while also adding GPS capabilities for detailed time and location data. Advanced driver alerts such as forward collision and lane departure warnings are integrated in both new dash cam models to help prevent drivers from either driving too close to the vehicle ahead or drifting off-road. Now with the inclusion of new voice controls (Dash Cam 55 only), drivers can start and stop audio recordings and more through voice commands to help keep their hands on the wheel and focused on the drive.

“The rise of dash cams has allowed us to align our new models with the needs of our customer base,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “With the Dash Cam 45 and 55, customers can do more than just record a drive. Now they can take advantage of advanced driver alerts through a discreet dash camera that seamlessly blends into a vehicle without obstructing a driver’s line of sight.”

The Dash Cam 55 provides high quality video captured in 1440p, 1080p, or 720p with a 3.7 megapixel camera while the Dash Cam 45 captures 1080p, or 720p with a 2.1 megapixel camera. Both models project excellent fields of view with a 2.0-inch LCD display screen. The addition of Sensory TrulyHandsfree voice control allows users to speak straightforward commands to the dash cam, such as “OK Garmin, save video,” and “OK Garmin, take a picture”, or even “OK Garmin, start Travelapse,” to activate the video capture feature that compresses hours of driving footage into minutes of highlights.

Helping drivers stay alert while on the road is one of the main staples of the new Garmin Dash Cam offerings. In addition to forward collision and lane departure warnings that can help drivers avoid incidents, the new dash cams also provide red light and speed camera warnings. What’s more, the models are outfitted for the very first time with the useful “Go” alert – a helpful camera-assisted feature that notifies distracted drivers when traffic ahead of their vehicle begins to move. For monitoring purposes, the new parking mode option (cable sold separately) allows the Dash Cam 45 and 55 to automatically start recording a parked vehicle’s surroundings if motion is detected while the engine is turned off.

Ease-of-use plays a major role for drivers with dash cams, due to the extensive amount of information a driver can experience on and off the road with advancements in technology and ever-increasing road distractions. As soon as the Dash Cam 45 and 55 are plugged in, they automatically start recording video without the need for time-consuming setups to start and stop video. With the introduction of built-in Wi-Fi, drivers can now wirelessly sync their videos to the free VIRB mobile app downloaded to a compatible smartphone to effortlessly share recordings with friends or even insurance agencies. In cases where close-up photography is needed, the snapshot feature allows drivers to easily remove the dash cam from its mount to snap photos of vehicles or property damage.

forerunner-banner

Garmin announced the Forerunner 935, a GPS running and triathlon watch with new performance monitoring tools and Elevate wrist-based heart rate technology. In addition to 24/7 heart rate monitoring, the Forerunner 935 includes new training features, allowing users to fine-tune exercise and recovery to be a better athlete. Easily paired with the new Running Dynamics Pod, Forerunner 935 users will now be able to see all six running dynamics without the need for a chest strap. At only 49 grams, every detail in its lightweight, comfortable design was chosen with the athlete in mind.

“With similar features to the fēnix 5 – our popular multisport GPS watch built for fitness, adventure and style – the Forerunner 935 is catered more towards athletes focused on performance and results,” said Dan Bartel, Garmin vice president of global consumer sales. “As a top-of-the-line GPS smartwatch, the Forerunner 935 not only provides users with insight into how their body is responding to fitness, but also offers data for every activity, allows them to automatically upload to Garmin Connectä, and is customizable with free apps, data fields and more from the Connect IQ store.”

New training features make it easier for Forerunner 935 users to monitor performance and better prepare for a race or training cycle. Training status automatically analyzes previous exercise and fitness levels to provide insight into how the athlete’s body is responding – letting them know if they are training productively, peaking or overreaching. Training load gives users an overview of their weekly activity and helps them determine if they are training in the right zone and whether their sessions are too easy or hard. Additionally, the new training effect metric tracks and reviews the aerobic and anaerobic benefit of a training session, letting athletes know how their training is improving their ability to push the limits. With these training features available at their fingertips, athletes can make adjustments and improvements to their training to become better, faster and more efficient come race day.

The Forerunner 935 allows users to go further with their running data. The simple-to-use and unobtrusive new Running Dynamics Pod clips to the waistband allowing athletes to see all six running dynamics – including cadence, ground contact time, stride length and more – on a compatible device* without the need for a chest strap. The Forerunner 935 also features advanced dynamics to help with cycling and swim training. While on a bike, it will track dynamics including power zones, time seated and standing, platform center offset and power phase. In the water, the Forerunner 935 will track distance, stroke, pace, personal records and more.

With Elevate wrist-based heart rate, Forerunner 935 users have around-the-clock heart rate monitoring without the need for an additional strap. With GPS and GLONASS coverage, athletes can better track their activities in challenging environments than with GPS alone. Additionally, the Forerunner 935 includes ABC (altimeter, barometer and compass) sensor capabilities. The built-in altimeter provides real-time elevation information, while the barometer can predict weather changes by showing short-term trends in air pressure. The compass can help users keep their bearings whether they’re moving or not.

Athletes can easily transition between sports with the press of a button utilizing the auto or manual multisport feature. Additional built-in activities include hiking, trail running, skiing, paddle sports, golf and more. The Forerunner 935 is also compatible with the full line of Varia cycling awareness accessories, Vector pedal-based power meter system and Indexä smart scale.

Available on the Forerunner 935, Strava Live Segments allow users to view real-time results on a run or ride, leaderboard rankings and how their current effort compares to their PR. Starred Strava segments automatically sync with the Forerunner 935 for live feedback during an activity. Purchases of the Forerunner 935 will receive a 60-day trial of Strava Premium, and owners of Connect IQ compatible devices will receive a 30-day trial.

Installed on the Forerunner 935, the new TrainingPeaks app allows users to download free workouts directly to their watch, then view the workout in real time, complete with intensity targets and interval durations. Following a session, athletes can automatically sync their completed workout back to TrainingPeaks for a detailed analysis of their performance and to measure their progress toward their goals. Users can also customize their watch with data fields, watch faces, widgets and additional apps including Uber ETA (by Garmin) and AccuWeather MinuteCast Minute by Minute Forecast in the Connect IQ store.

When paired with a compatible smartphone, the Forerunner 935 automatically uploads to Garmin Connect, an online fitness community where users can track workouts, sleep patterns, join online challenges to compete against friends and earn virtual badges. GroupTrack allows users to keep tabs on those they train with, while LiveTrack lets loved ones follow along on runs and rides in real time.

The Forerunner 935 features up to 24 hours of battery life in GPS mode, up to 50 hours in UltraTracä battery saver mode and up to two weeks in watch mode. It is available in black for $499.99. A tri-bundle option – which includes a black watch face with force yellow strap, HRM- Tri, HRM-Swim, Quick Release Kit and additional strap in black – is available for $649.99. Compatible with optional Garmin QuickFitä bands in leather, silicone or metal, the Forerunner 935 lets users go from workplace to workout – no tools required.
